Message of condolence on the passing of David Dinkins

I am feeling keenly the loss of David Dinkins, someone who was a friend to Madiba and to me. David was the first Black mayor of New York City, and he had just stepped into the role when Madiba was released from prison. Over many years he showed us a special quality of hospitality and, of course, supported Madiba’s initiatives, causes and organisations. David will be remembered for many things, including his longstanding commitment to the global anti-apartheid movement. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and associates at this difficult time. We salute him, and all those who gave of their time, resources and activism to making the anti-apartheid movement the successful global phenomenon that it became.
